In our previous post we provided suggestions on things that anyone facing a divorce should do to get the best possible result. In this post we will focus on ways that someone who is divorcing and has children, can prepare.

After child custody, perhaps the most obvious thing that needs to be determined in a divorce where children are involved is child support. Health insurance, a big concern in today's day in age, is often determined as a part of this. Looking forward, sometimes many years, it is also a good idea to determine how college tuition will be covered as well. However the financial responsibility is divided, it is a good idea to avoid using retirement funds to cover one's share.

When parents decide to divorce, it can be emotionally difficult for children to deal with. They may feel as though the split is in some way their fault. Because divorce inherently brings so many changes for children, when possible, it is important to try and maintain a sense of stability. Sometimes, one of the best ways of doing this is to remain living in the family home. While this is the most desirable option for many people, it is not always financially viable in the long run. It is important to take the time to determine this upfront so that a lot of extra time and energy in not put into trying to hold onto the residence.

Divorce is rarely an easy process. When participants do what they can to prepare ahead of time, it may make the entire thing easier for all involved.
